Floods, Snow, Roads

Given our rural location, and proximity to the River Severn, severe weather will inevitably pose a challenge for getting about, and can occasionally pose a much bigger threat.

Refuse Collection and Recycling

- Bin day is Tuesday. If there is a bank holiday on the Monday, the collection is most likely to be moved to Wednesday. Collections alternate between green refuse bins and blue recycling bins. Food waste caddies are collected every week. The 2021-22 collection calendar is here. Bins must be left out, ready for collection, from 7:00am.

For Christmas collections, see here.

- During floods, or if holiday collections are missed, blue one-off recycling bags can be collected from Jenny Miles, Rowan Cottage, 780565

- Christmas trees can be recycled in your brown bin as part of the garden waste collection service. If the tree is taller than 6ft, please cut it so that it fits in the bin and can be emptied safety into the vehicle. If you do not have a brown bin, you can take your tree to one of a number of garden centres in the borough and it will be collected and composted.

Footpaths, Verges and Bird-Watching

- Hasfield has some excellent footpath walks - see map here. It is the responsibility of landowners to maintain styles and gates, although carrying a pair of secateurs with you to trim brambles is always a good idea. Gloucestershire Highways are responsible for the footpath surface, footbridges and signage, and issues can be reported here. Walks in the wider area can be found here.

- A number of our local verges are covered by biodiversity conservation, and so are likely to remain uncut - see here for local maps, or here for the full county list. The council also publishes a Highways & Biodiversity Guidance here.

- Ashleworth Ham on Ham Road is managed as a nature reserve by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. During the winter it becomes the perfect habitat for wildfowl including pintails, teal, shovelers, tufted ducks, pochards, wigeons, goldeneyes and great crested grebes and little grebes. Details here.

Police and Emergency Services

- Our nominated PCSO (police community support officer) is James King. He can be contacted for non-emergency calls on 01452 907330, or via https://www.gloucestershire.police.uk/neighbourhood-policing/. He encourages villagers to report any suspicions or concerns.

- We are quite a way from Tewkesbury and Gloucester, and post codes cover wide areas. Download What3Words to your phone so that you can easily give a very exact location.

Local Shops

- The Native Butcher farm shop on Wickridge Street sells local meat, ready meals and take-aways, details here.

- Ashleworth Hub here is a shop, deli, post office and cafe. The shop opening hours are  Monday – Friday: 08:00-17:00,  Saturday: 09:00-16:00, Sunday: 09:30-15:00. Check for cafe and post office.

Are You Ready?

The Local Resilience Forum in Gloucestershire has produced an updated version of the Are You Ready Booklet. This booklet contains information and advice on how individuals can be prepared for and respond to emergency situations. It contains much good advice for floods, power cuts, severe weather, etc. Download here.

Roads

Road closed map via AA here. You can zoom in to see minor roads. Though it's not always accurate, it is generally more up-to-date than Google maps. Plenty of advice available on the "Hartpury, Maisemore, Ashleworth, Staunton & Corse, Tirley, Redmarley & Hasfield" Facebook page here. During severe weather, Glos. Highways post road closures to a page here

Remember, driving through even low level floods at anything but walking pace risks severe damage to your car. If you drive past a road closed sign into a flood, your insurance company may refuse a claim.

Floods

If your property is in danger of flooding, there is an emergency list of contact numbers here, or contact Hasfield's Flood Warden, Martin Hope 01452 780250.

For direct link to the Environment Agency website showing the live water level at Haw Bridge click here. The five day flood risk forecast can be found here as well as advice on flooding. For more detail on the Haw Bridge gauge height and the consequential flood effects, click here. Potential surface water flooding is detailed here

Tewkesbury Council policy on supplying sand bags is changeable. Although the bags can be obtained, it's likely you will have to fill them yourself.

A new tool is available to make it easier to let the county council know when flooding happens. Just go to SWIM and follow the simple steps. There is also useful interactive guide: the essential flood guide. This information helps Gloucestershire County Council  to build up a picture of areas at risk and how to concentrate resources where they are most needed.

The Environment Agency in March 2016 carried out an initial assessment of "scenarios which may be effective in reducing River Severn levels in Gloucester and the surrounding area". Download here.

Snow

Visit the Gloucestershire County Council Highways website for local road and cold weather tips here, as well as gritting procedures. Hasfield has a Snow Warden - Martin Hope 01452 780250. His duties are listed on the link above. Please call him should you require salt for pavements and roads - although Gloucester Highways are very parsimonious with their salt. There are grit bins on steeper slopes - feel free to use them, but you will need a shovel. GCC supplied grit is not for private use. We do occasionally get a gritter up through the village.

Power Cuts

Western Power are responsible for our distribution, so call them on 105 to report a power cut or get information. A map of current known power cuts is here.

What should I do during a power cut?

- Switch off all electrical appliances that shouldn’t be left unattended, ready for when the power comes back on.
- Leave a light on so you know when the power outage has been resolved.
- Check to see if your neighbours are okay.
- Wrap up warm.
- Contact your network operator to report the power cut, either by calling 105 or via their other available channels.
